How to make an app with AI

AI app builders turn a description into a working web app, with screens, a database, sign-in and hosting. You can have a first version running in an afternoon without writing code. This guide explains which tool to use, how to describe the app so the AI builds the right thing, what it costs, and where the limits are.

1. Describe one small app

Start with the smallest version that is still useful: one type of user, three or four screens and one main task, such as a booking tracker, a quote calculator or a customer portal. AI builders do well on small, clear apps and lose their way on sprawling ones. You can add features once the core works.

2. Choose the tool for your situation

Lovable is the friendliest if you never want to see code: it builds a React app with a Supabase database behind it and lets you export the code to GitHub. Bolt is the fastest way to get something on screen for a demo. Replit gives you a full development environment with an AI agent, which is the better home if you or a developer will keep working on the code. If what you need is really a business website with a few app features, such as payments or a member area, an AI website builder like B12 is simpler.

3. Write the first prompt like a brief

Say who uses the app, what they need to do, which information it stores and what each screen shows. For example: "A booking app for a hair salon. Customers pick a service and a time and enter their phone number. The owner sees today's bookings and can cancel one." Clear nouns and verbs give the AI less room to guess.

4. Build in small steps

Ask for one change at a time and test it before the next. Every request uses credits or tokens, and large vague requests use more of them and break more things. Save working versions as you go, and connect GitHub early so the code is safe if something goes wrong.

5. Test with real people, then publish

Share the app with two or three people who would actually use it and watch where they get stuck. Then connect a custom domain on a paid plan and publish. Check sign-in, payments and anything that stores personal data with extra care.

6. Know when to bring in a developer

Payments, unusual integrations, performance and security are where AI builders most often need human help. If your app is growing into a real product, keep the code in GitHub from the start so a developer can pick it up.

What it costs

All three tools have free tiers that are enough to try an idea. Paid plans start at $25 a month for Lovable Pro (100 monthly credits plus five a day), $25 a month for Bolt Pro (from 10 million tokens a month) and $20 a month for Replit Core ($18 billed yearly, with $20 of usage included). A busy month of building can cost more than the plan, so set spending limits early.

Questions people ask

Can I really make an app without coding?

Yes, for a first version. Tools like Lovable, Bolt and Replit build working web apps from a description. Complex apps still reach a point where a developer has to take over the code.

Which AI app builder is best for beginners?

Lovable, because it builds a full app with a database and never requires you to open the code. Bolt is quicker for a throwaway prototype.

Is the app mine?

With Lovable and Bolt you can export the code to GitHub, and Replit projects are ordinary code from the start, so you can move the app to a developer or another host.

Can I publish it on the Play Store or App Store?

These tools build web apps that run in a browser. Publishing a native mobile app usually needs extra work, such as wrapping the web app or rebuilding it with mobile tools.
